Video activities can be used to play video as part of the learning path. Video can be hosted by Acadio or externally using services such as Vimeo, Youtube, WarpWire, or Wystia. An external service is recommended for larger video files (HD, UHD, 4K) as these services utilize dynamic transcoding to serve the best-quality video for the student based on their internet connection.
Follow the steps below to add a Video activity to the curriculum:
- Navigate to the course you wish to build and select Curriculum from the course navigation.
- Use the + below the list of Curriculum items to add a new activity to the end of the course. Use the + to the right of the list of Curriculum items to add a new activity directly below the selected item or within the selected section. Then, select Video from the menu.
- Double-click the new video activity to edit it.
- Click Video Source to add your video.
- To upload a new video, select the Create New tab and click Choose Video.
- To use an externally hosted video, select Create asset from external video and paste the full embed code provided by the hosting service into the Embed Code field. Additional configuration may be required. See instructions for configuring videos from Vimeo and other services in the next section.
Below is an example of an embed code provided by Vimeo:
<div style="padding:56.25% 0 0 0;position:relative;"><iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/948350159?badge=0&autopause=0&player_id=0&app_id=58479" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:80%;height:100%;" title="lecture 1"></iframe></div><script src="https://player.vimeo.com/api/player.js"></script>
- Add a title for the new video activity. You can also add an optional introduction and estimated completion time.
- When finished, click Save and publish your activity.
Configuring videos hosted by streaming services
When using a hosting service like Vimeo, YouTube, or Rumble, the video's sharing or privacy settings must also be configured to allow embedding on other sites and to allow viewing by public users. If privacy concerns you, you may prefer to upload your videos directly to Acadio.
For Vimeo, specifically, the Link Privacy and Embed Privacy settings will need to be configured as below:
- From your video, click Share. The Link Sharing settings should be set to either Public or Hide from Vimeo.
- Next, click the Embed tab and ensure that either Anywhere or Specific Domains is selected for the Embed Privacy. If you selected Specific Domains, be sure to include both the student and admin URLs for your instance of Acadio (e.g https://admin.acadio.com and https://yourdomain.acadio.com).
Other streaming services will have similar settings controlling where the video can be embedded and who can view it.
Using Acadio's slide player
Videos hosted by Acadio can utilize the platform's slide player.
Follow the steps below to add slides to your video:
- After uploading your video, select the Add Slides checkbox.
- In the first field, enter a time for when this slide should appear. Then, enter a title for the slide in the second field.
- Next, set a time for the first bullet point or annotation. Then, enter the content for that bullet point. Media, including images, videos, PDFs, and URLs, can be inserted into the slide content.
- Click the Add Content to Slide button to create additional bullet points or annotations on the current slide.
- Click New Slide at XX:XX to create a new slide.
- When finished, click Save and publish your activity.
Please note only videos hosted on Acadio can utilize the slide player.
TIP: You can add a Poster Image to videos hosted on the platform. If you have the Video app enabled for your course, the Poster Image will be used as a thumbnail for the video in the library. For externally hosted videos embedded from services like Vimeo, Youtube, or Wystia, the thumbnail and player controls are managed within the administrative tools of those services.
