Learning paths are a group of related courses aimed at helping students achieve specific goals, such as obtaining a certification or developing a skill. Depending on the configuration, students can complete the courses in a learning path sequentially or non-sequentially.

Learning paths are not complete until all courses contained within them are completed. Therefore, only Certifiable and Training course types should be used in learning paths intended for student completion. Since Open-ended Learning courses cannot be completed, including them in a learning path means the path also cannot be completed. Learning paths can be configured to issue a certificate upon completion and can be reported.

In addition to being completable, with full certificate and reporting options, the courses within the learning path are separately reportable, depending on their individual configuration. This means that courses in a learning path can be reported upon completion independently of the path completion.

Learning paths are created and configured similarly to courses. They are also accessible to both admins and students in the course library.

Creating a new learning path

Follow the steps below to create a new learning path:

  1. Select Courses from the main menu.
  2. Click the Create Course button in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Select Learning Path from the modal.

  4. Create your learning path landing page. Set the cover image and enter a description of the learning path, objectives, and any additional information in the editable text area. This information should be relevant to all courses in the learning path.
  5. Select Curriculum from the course menu. The curriculum provides a structure for the learning path. Courses can be added, removed, and reordered here.
  6. Select Course from the list of available activities.

  7. Select the newly added course from the curriculum to begin editing the item.
  8. Enter a name for this course in the Title field. This can be the same title as the course you plan to select in the next step.
  9. Click into the Select Course field and begin typing the name of the course you wish to select. Then, select it from the list of results.

  10. When finished, click Publish and select Publish immediately to make this course an active item in the learning path.
  11. Repeat this process with each course you wish to add to the learning path.

Once you've completed building the learning path, select Settings from the course menu to ensure the course status is Active and assign it to a credit.

Configuring the learning path

Learning paths can be configured to enforce linear progression, meaning students must complete the courses in sequential order. In other words, students cannot proceed to the next course until the current course is completed.

Follow the steps below to enable linear progression on the learning path:

  1. Select Settings from the course menu and click the Options tab.
  2. Scroll down to Course Experience.
  3. Enable Linear Progression by switching the toggle.
  4. Click Save.

IMPORTANT: Enabling linear progression on a learning path does not enable linear progression for each course contained within it. To enable linear progression on a specific course, you must exit the learning path and edit the Course Experience options within that course.
