Periodic authentication requires students to reauthenticate at specified intervals by entering a secret. Failure to reauthenticate locks the course and requires either an admin to unlock it or the student to reset the secret by clicking a link that is emailed to the address on the account.
Follow the steps below to enable period authentication on a course:
-
Navigate to the course you wish to configure.
-
Select Settings from the course menu and click the Options tab. Then, scroll down the page to the Course Experience section.
- Turn on the toggle for Periodic Authentication.
- Enter an authentication interval below using the time selector (e.g. entering 30 minutes in this field will force the student to authenticate every 30 minutes.)
- Scroll down and click the Save button.
Unlocking a course
Follow the steps below to unlock a course for a student:
- Navigate to the course that needs to be unlocked.
- Select Students from the course navigation menu.
- Locate the student you need to allow back into the course and click their name to view the Manage Student area.
- Find that authentication alera below the student's name and email address and above the overview. Click Unlock Student.
Resetting the secret
Students who cannot remember their secret can reset it using a link on the authentication prompt. Clicking the Reset Your Code link will email the address associated with the account. Students can then follow the link in the email to set a new secret and continue with the course.
